Facts about Hugh Grant
Hugh Grant Biography
A specialist at playing charming twits and warm-hearted rogues, Hugh Grant became an international star in the 1994 comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral.
By that time, Grant was a ten-year veteran of British television and film, and the film’s success led to a movie career made up mostly of romantic comedies.
Grant’s films included Sense and Sensibility (1995, with Kate Winslet), the pregnancy comedy Nine Months (1996, with Julianne Moore), the romance Notting Hill (1999, with Julia Roberts), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001, with Renee Zellweger), About a Boy (2002, starring Rachel Weisz and based on the book by Nick Hornby) and American Dreamz (2006, with Mandy Moore).
Off screen, Grant was known for his dismissal of acting as a profession and his disgust with celebrity, and on screen he went from waggish rascal to saracastic cad.
Then he played against type in dramatic roles and earned the critics’ favor with performances in Florence Johnson Jenkins (2016, starring Meryl Streep) and Paddington 2 (2017).
Grant’s dramatic screen career took off and he was nominated for Emmys for his leading roles in A Very English Scandal (2019) and The Undoing (2020).
