Liev Schreiber Biography

Name at birth: Isaac Liev Schreiber

Liev Schreiber is a tall, slightly baby-faced actor of stage and screen, recognized by moviegoers as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009, starring Hugh Jackman) and as the new editor in charge in 2015’s Oscar-winning Spotlight.

A Yale School of Drama grad, Schreiber has spent as much time on stage as he has on movie screens. He won a Tony Award in 2005 as best featured actor in a play, for his role in the revival of Glengarry Glen Ross.

He also won critical acclaim (and a Tony nomination) as the star of the 2007 Broadway revival of the play Talk Radio, and appeared with Scarlet Johansson in the 2010 production of Arthur Miller‘s A View From the Bridge.

Schreiber made his breakthrough in the movies as Cotton Weary in the Scream series of horror films (1996-2000), and has since proved himself as a reliable dramatic lead and supporting player.

His other films include Big Night (1996, starring Stanley Tucci); Sphere (1998, starring Dustin Hoffman); The Sum of All Fears (2002, starring Morgan Freeman); the horror remake The Omen (2006, with Schreiber in the Gregory Peck role from the 1976 original); the thriller remake The Manchurian Candidate (2008, with Meryl Streep); the World War II drama Defiance (2009, starring Daniel Craig); The Last Days on Mars (2013); and The French Dispatch (2021, directed by Wes Anderson).

On television, Schreiber is best known as the lead in the series Ray Donovan (2013-20), for which he received three Emmy nominations. He was nominated a fourth time for the role in Ray Donovan: The Movie (2022).
