Don Ellis

Ellis was a young and rising jazz musician at the time; he turned 28 that year.  The album featured Ellis on trumpet with bassist Gary Peacock, pianist Paul Bley, and Nick Martinis and Gene Stone on drums. The AllMusic guide notes that Ellis "sought during this period to transfer ideas and concepts from modern classical music into adventurous jazz."
