If you thought today’s election shenanigans were bad, check out the messy presidential elections of 1876, when one man — Judge David Davis of Illinois (above) — had the chance to decide the election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel Tilden

Davis passed up the chance, but even his motives weren’t too pure.
