Rock and blues singer Janis Joplin died on this day in 1970.
Cause of death: “Acute heroin – morphine intoxication,” according to the Coroner to the Stars, Thomas Noguchi. Noguchi said Joplin had also been drinking, but that her death did not look like a murder or suicide.
Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years later, as part of the Hall’s 10th class. Also inducted that year: Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa.
