Speaking of Dr. Wu: Turns out that one guy — Phil Woods — played the alto sax solos on “Dr. Wu” and on Billy Joel‘s tune “Just the Way You Are.”
“Wu” was 1975, “JTWYA” was 1977. (Woods comments on the latter here.)
Woods also married Charlie Parker‘s widow, Chan, after Parker died in 1955. Woods and Chan split up in 1973, a few years before “Dr. Wu.”
Chan Parker went on to write the memoir My Life in E-Flat, and advised Clint Eastwood during the creation of his 1988 Parker biopic, Bird.
Chan Parker died in 1999. Woods, born in 1931, is still up and at ’em.
