Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu turns 79 today, and he announced his retirement from public life.
That doesn’t mean he’ll stop working altogether. He still has a peace center to run, after all. Archbishop Tutu said he’ll be giving up his university position and stop giving interviews. He plans to spend more time with his wife.
The first black archbishop in South Africa, Desmond Mpilo Tutu won the Nobel Prize in 1984.
The archbishop certainly does get around. For example, we can see him giggling and meeting David Beckham, who Tutu describes as “a nice guy.”
And here’s Desmond Tutu talking about the concept of ubuntu to a crowd of students.
To see Archbishop Tutu in a funny hat, see this interview with ESPN about the World Cup in 2010.
And here’s an ITN News video that looks back on his career. It’s a curious look back that doesn’t really explain a lot about Archbishop Tutu as much as use him as an opportunity to take a couple of swipes at U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. So… um, yeah. Happy Birthday, Desmond Tutu!
