Former First Lady Barbara Bush has died at age 92. While no cause of death was announced, The Washington Post reports that she had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; a spokesman announced two days ago that she was in failing health and had “decided not to seek additional medical treatment.”
As late as last night, she was reportedly still holding conversations and drinking bourbon.
Barbara Bush was married to former President George Bush for 72 years; they were wed in 1945, while he was on leave from service in World War II.
She was with him throughout his political career, from his election as a U.S. Representative in 1966 (above) through his four years as president of the United States (1989-93). Her son George W. Bush was president from 2001-09, and another son, Jeb Bush, was governor of Florida from 1999-2007.
