The BBC and the International Herald Tribune report that Benazir Bhutto has been killed at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. She was reportedly shot by an assassin who then detonated a suicide bomb.
Bhutto was one of the world’s most famous politicians in the 1990s, and had recently returned from eight years in exile to become a renewed political force in Pakistan.
Early reports said she had escaped the attack, but the website of the Pakistan People’s Party now says she has been assassinated.
