Carrie Prejean speaks at The Family Research Council's annual 'Values Voter Summit' held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC on 18 September 2009.
Prejean, as the reigning Miss California, was the runner-up in the Miss USA pageant that year. During the pageant she answered a question about gay marriage by saying that she believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. The ensuing kerfuffle made her a hero to conservative Christian groups and an anti-hero to liberal activists.
