A portrait of Charles de Gaulle, taken circa 1942. This was during World War II, when de Gaulle was leading the Free French forces after escaping from occupied France to England. De Gaulle was born in 1890, so he would have been around 52 years old when this photo was taken.
De Gaulle was a dominating figure in postwar France, and was President of France from 1959-69.
