Douglas Emhoff Biography
Douglas Emhoff became the “second gentleman” of the United States when his wife, Kamala Harris, took office as U.S. vice president on January 20, 2021.
Douglas Emhoff was born in Brooklyn and raised in New Jersey and California. He graduated from Cal State Northridge in 1987 with a degree in Communication Studies, then earned a law degree in 1990 from the Gould School of Law at USC.
Emhoff spent most of his legal career as a corporate and entertainment lawyer, in firms including Pillsbury Winthrop and Venable. He became a “media, sports and entertainment partner” at megafirm DLA Piper in 2017. After Kamala Harris’s election as vice president, Emhoff quit that job permanently to avoid any conflict of interests.
Douglas Emhoff began dating Kamala Harris in 2013, when she was the Attorney General of California. They were married on August 22, 2014. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016. As the running mate of Democrat Joe Biden, she was elected vice president in 2020.

Before his marriage to Kamala Harris, Doug Emhoff was married to film producer Kerstin Mackin from 1992 until their divorce in 2008. They have two children: son Cole (born circa 1995) and daughter Ella (b. circa 1999)… Along with being the first male to be the spouse of a president or vice-president, Douglas Emhoff is also the first Jewish person to be the spouse of a president or vice-president… Douglas Emhoff succeeded Karen Pence as second spouse; she’s the wife of Mike Pence, VP from 2017-2021 under President Donald Trump.
