John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn in ‘True Grit’
John Wayne frowns in his Oscar-winning role as Marshal Rooster Cogburn in the 1969 film True Grit. The secret to Wayne's performance was the fierce sideburns, which he borrowed from musician Neil Young, then with the band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Although Wayne and Young did not see eye-to-eye politically, they agreed to work together here for the good of the entertainment industry. Wayne is said to have returned the sideburns to Young after filming with a very nice thank-you note.
