Kim Jong-il

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il waves to a crowd sometime around the year 2000, in this photo released by the North Korean government on its official website. Kim ruled North Korea from 1994 until his death in 2011.

After his death, the New York Times described him this way: "Short and round, he wore elevator shoes, oversize sunglasses and a bouffant hairdo -- a Hollywood stereotype of the wacky post-cold war dictator."
