Neil Armstrong with a buzz cut

This early NASA portrait of Neil Armstrong was taken in 1964. Neil Armstrong was born in 1930, so he turned 34 years old the year this photo was taken. Armstrong joined NASA's astronaut program in 1962, and in 1964 was in training for his first mission in a Gemini space capsule. He launched in Gemini 8 on March 16, 1966, and later went on to be commander of Apollo 11 and the first human to step on the moon.
