Then Wilson moved to Hollywood, and auditioned for Bridesmaids — but the role went to Melissa McCarthy. Wilson so impressed director Judd Apatow she earned a part and stole scenes as Kristen Wiig‘s indelicate roommate (along with Matt Lucas).
She popped up on TV here and there, including in Workaholics, and on the big screen she starred in the 2012 movies Bachelorette (with Kirsten Dunst), Struck by Lightning (with Chris Colfer), What to Expect When You’re Expecting (with Cameron Diaz), Ice Age: Continental Drift (with Aziz Ansari) and Pitch Perfect (with Anna Kendrick).
Wilson’s screen career has been focused on comedy, but in 2022 she began to move beyond the genre. Her films include Isn’t It Romantic (2019), JoJo Rabbit (2019, directed by Taika Waititi), The Hustle (2019, with Anne Hathaway) and Senior Year (2022).
Extra credit
Pitch Perfect was a big hit that spawned two sequels (2015 and 2017) and Rebel Wilson received plenty of press attention for being the “fat” comic actress, which was followed in 2021 by plenty of press attention for losing weight and being the “no longer fat” actress. Wilson shrugged it off and proceeded with her film career… In 2009 Wilson completed her law degree from University of New South Wales.
