Tupac Shakur at his last public appearance

Rapper Tupac Shakur, wearing a terrific vest and holding a 1996-era cell phone, arrives at the 1996 MTV Music Awards. This happened in New York City on September 4, 1996. He was nominated for Best Rap Video that year, losing to Coolio for "Gangsta's Paradise." Shockingly, this was Tupac's last public appearance: he was shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas three days later, on September 7, and died of his wounds on September 13. He was only 25 years old.
