Yup, he did it. Barry Bonds hit his 756th career home run on Tuesday night to become American baseball’s all-time home run leader. He did the trick with a homer off of Washington Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik.
The San Francisco Chronicle is a good place to read all about it.
Bonds’s hit moves him one past former champ Hank Aaron, who had held the title since 1974. Babe Ruth retired in 1935 with 714 home runs; Aaron passed him 39 years later; and Bonds passed Aaron after 33 years.
The all-time worldwide home run leader is still Sadaharu Oh, who hit a remarkable 868 in Japan’s major leagues from 1959-80.
