Cate Blanchett for SK-II Skin Cream: Whole Lotta Posin’ Going On

  • One of the curiosities of being an Oscar-winning movie star is that you may be asked to promote certain odd products. Like, say, $215-a-jar skin cream. That’s what Cate Blanchett was up to today in Tokyo, where she appeared for her longtime sponsor SK-II.

Isn’t there something just a little surreal about a photo opportunity and press conference where everyone is there to examine your skin?

It’s OK to smile, because it’s all so nutty! Or perhaps Ms. Blanchett is smiling because while it’s a lot to ask of even a well-paid movie star to cough up $80 an ounce for skin cream, she’s getting case after case of it delivered to her tasteful Sydney (or Adelaide?) mansion for free.

Now it’s time to relax on a chair that has been carefully chosen for modern design, sleek simplicity, and glittering whiteness. Is she answering questions about her skin, from people who are staring at her skin? You bet.

The white jacket, the white dress, the white chair… how long were the conversations, do you think, planning it all out? On the other hand, they got it right: It’s all so incredibly tasteful and perfect! Cate Blanchett knows how to pose.

To wrap up, Ms. Blanchett poses with Haruka Ayase, a very busy Japanese actress. Who, surely not by coincidence, is all in black.  She’s 30, Cate Blanchett is age 46. #ChangeDestiny!

Well, with apologies, I can’t explain why this seems so fascinating. Just an artifact of 21st-century living. A pro doing her job.

Let’s finish with a palate-cleanser from November: Cate Blanchett pulling the beard of Ralph Fiennes at The Museum of Modern Art’s 8th Annual Film Benefit. His skin looks pretty good, too!
