Talk radio host Laura Schlessinger announced her decision to end her long-running radio show. Here she is, explaining her decision to Larry King:
The decision comes on the heels of a dust-up over her repeated use of a racial epithet on the air last week. She apologized for her behavior, but now says she needs to “be freer to say the things that I believe need to be said to the people in this country.”
Dr. Laura — her stage name — explains she’s not retiring, she’s simply quitting her radio show at the end of the year, to “regain my First Amendment rights,” as she puts it. Schlessinger tells King her opponents are trying to “silence” her, so she’s walking away from a nationally syndicated show she’s hosted since 1994.
She says she’ll continue to write books and give lectures, adding “this is the era of the internet.”
