Elvis Presley died 30 years ago, on 16 August 1977.
Time Magazine has a rather cynical report in the “good career move” vein. Elvis’s estate is holding an anniversary concert, “starring the real Elvis Presley, via video,” with a $90 top ticket price.
The Philippine Inquirer profiles Lucito Bertol, the “first Elvis Presley of the Philippines”.
And nearly everyone mentions the new Elvis-branded Reese’s Peanut Butter and Banana Cups. (The King-sized, natch.)
President Jimmy Carter made an interesting (if brief) public statement the day after Presley’s death in 1977, calling him “a symbol… of the vitality, rebelliousness, and good humor of his country.” (Turns out they may have been related.)
Here’s Presley’s original 1977 obituary from The Washington Post.
