Today is the birthday of cartoonist Daniel Clowes (rhymes with “rose”). He drew Ghost World and David Boring and Art School Confidential. Below are two parts of a BBC documentary on modern cartoonists, and Clowes is the focus.
It’s good because you don’t see too many interviews with Clowes, and here you’ll get to see him talk about technical stuff, and you’ll see him draw one of the characters from Ghost World. It’s less good because the introduction and conclusion go on and on about how important the comics are, and blah-blah-blah about the philosophical underpinnings in the works of Clowes, R. Crumb and Art Spiegelman (of Maus fame).
Because, you see, if you don’t have an erudite expert telling you it’s important, you wouldn’t be sure if it’s okay to like it.
