French First Lady Carla Bruni has given birth to a daughter. It’s the first child for Bruni with her husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The baby was born in Paris at the Clinique de La Muette. Mother and child are doing fine. Bruni is 43, Sarkozy 57.
The new little girl is the first child ever born to a sitting French president. (At least, officially. Mitterand sure seemed to get around.) Add it to the list of other firsts for Sarkozy and Bruni:
- Nicolas Sarkozy was the first divorcee ever elected president of France.
- Then he became the first president ever to divorce while in office. Sarkozy split with his second wife, Cécilia Ciganer-Albeniz, a few months after his election in 2007.
- Sarkozy is not the first French President ever to marry while in office. That honor goes to Gaston Doumergue, who married his childhood sweetheart 12 days before leaving office in 1931.
- But, Carla Bruni is the first French First Lady to have dated Mick Jagger.
Congratulations to the happy family, in any case. Bruni gave a great quote to an Italian journalist earlier this year about politics and pregnancy:
“We’re in a time of crisis, but if human reproduction was decided by thinking about whether you’re going to have a perfect life, we wouldn’t be here to talk about it, neither you nor I.”
