Volta is the feisty Italian who invented the battery (more or less) and gave us the electrical term volt. Volta did the job using some truly old-school equipment, including the charmingly-named electric-phlogopneumatic pistol.
He also had a cracking series of arguments with Giuseppi Galvani over electricity in frogs.
