Edith Shain, who appeared in the famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photo of a soldier kissing a nurse at the end of World War II (she’s the nurse), has died at the age of 91.
The LIFE magazine photo, “V-J Day in Times Square,” was shot 14 August 1945 in New York City. V-J stood for Victory over Japan. World War II was over, and Americans were celebrating in the streets. Eisenstaedt captured the moment when two strangers — in uniform — kiss.
Shain came forward in the 1970s and identified herself as the nurse. It’s not quite clear who the sailor was.
Here’s the news from the BBC.
