Senator Barack Obama has resigned his membership in Trinity United Church of Christ.
The Chicago Sun-Times has the story. The paper also has the transcript of his Q&A with the press, with Obama speaking at length on the issue.
Rev. John Thomas, president of the national United Church of Christ, issued a brief statement noting “the painful reality that many candidates and public officials now find it nearly impossible to be an active member of a particular religious community, given our divisive political culture.”
Across town, The Chicago Tribune asks the modern-day question: “Can a political figure join a house of worship without putting its spiritual leader or congregation under the microscope?”
