Cincinnati Bengal Chad Ocho Cinco may have a few old jerseys around soon.
The NFL says that before the former Chad Johnson can wear a jersey with his new name, he has to buy out the entire nationwide stock of NFL-approved “C. Johnson” jerseys now in stores. At $48 each.
The wide receiver, who wears number 85, had his legal name changed to “Ochocinco” this summer so that he could wear his nickname on the back of his jersey.
The NFL says it is merely protecting its contractual obligation to Reebok, which makes all the league’s official gear. “Thousands” of the C. Johnson jerseys are still in stores.
