Pat Summitt Has Alzheimer’s Disease

  • “There’s not going to be any pity party, and I’ll make sure of that.”

Pat Summitt, the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history, has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia — specifically, Alzheimer’s Disease.

Pat Summitt is only 59.  The shocking diagnosis came after she visited the Mayo Clinic in May, looking for the cause of “months of erratic behavior.” Summitt told the Knoxville News Sentinel that her grandmother also suffered from severe dementia.

Summitt still plans to coach the Tennessee Lady Vols this year, on the advice of Mayo Clinic doctors — and to keep coaching “as long as the good Lord is willing” as she says in this admirably frank video released by the university.
