Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book and Gunga Din, died on this day in 1936.
The year is surprising. Kipling seems like a figure from the olde Victorian Age, not someone who was still alive when Woody Allen and Willie Nelson were lads.
1936 means Kipling outlasted 20th-century faves like gangster John Dillinger (died in 1934) and Communist star V.I. Lenin (1924). And Kipling only just beat flier Amelia Earhart and jazz singer Bessie Smith to the punch: both died in 1937.
