Josip Broz Tito was the leader of a unified Yugoslavia from the end of the Second World War until he died in 1980. He was a popular figure in his homeland, first because he helped drive out the Nazis in World War II, then because he defied both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. in the period known as the Cold War, pursuing his own path to a socialist federation.
I was in Yugoslavia in 1982, just two years after the great Tito died from an infection. Everywhere you went there were reminders of Tito. Every store sold Tito merchandise, and I left Belgrade with my very own Tito key ring.
