Hillary Clinton steps down as Secretary of State today, and Gail Collins has a fond salute:
Women of Clinton’s generation have a special bond with her because she encapsulates their story. She spoke for their rebel youth at her Wellesley graduation, demanding “a more immediate, ecstatic, and penetrating mode of living” than the older generation ever knew.
For context, here’s a Folger’s Coffee TV ad from about 1964, one year before Hillary Clinton entered Wellesley College:
Ahem.
Clinton has now been a private attorney, Watergate staff lawyer, First Lady, U.S. senator and Secretary of State. One hopes Harvey did as well in his office career.
It just goes to show you how much times have changed in the last 50 years, with women like Clinton (and the first woman Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright) leading the way. Congratulations to them.
