It’s been 24 hours of highly unusual retirements.
Golf legend Annika Sorenstam said last night that she would quit golf at the end of the 2008 season. This even though she’s currently ranked number two in the world behind Lorena Ochoa of Mexico.
Then tennis star Justine Henin topped Sorenstam this morning. She’s retiring immediately — “taking the scissors to her own strings,” as The Daily Telegraph puts it — while ranked number one in the world. And less than two weeks before the French Open, the major she was favored to win a fourth consecutive time.
Sorenstam is 37, Henin 25. Everything speeds up in the 21st century, just like the sci-fi writers said it would.
Fortunately, two more stars are on the way: People magazine is pleased to report that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are having twins.
